Use Perplexity when you want to look something up and see where the answer came from: it's an answer engine that cites its sources inline in every answer. Use ChatGPT when you want a general assistant to write, brainstorm, analyse files, build things and code, with search and research as part of a broader toolkit. Perplexity is the better research tool for quick, sourced answers. ChatGPT is the better all-round assistant. As of October 2026 ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month and Perplexity Pro is $17 a month billed annually, and both have free plans.

How we compared

We compared the plans, prices and features on OpenAI's and Perplexity's own pricing pages and help centers as of October 2026, in US dollars. We didn't benchmark answer quality or accuracy. Both companies change models and limits often, so we focus on what each product is designed for and what you pay, and we left out usage limits that weren't stated as numbers. Prices can differ by country.

The real difference: answer engine vs assistant

Perplexity starts from a question and searches the web to answer it. Perplexity says every answer includes inline citations, so you can click through to the source. You can pick which AI model writes the answer, and its Research mode builds longer reports on complex topics. It also offers Perplexity Computer, which creates documents, apps and other files on Pro and Max. Perplexity is best when the answer lives somewhere on the web and you want to see where.

ChatGPT starts from a conversation. It's built to help you write, plan, explain, analyse uploaded files, create images and code. It can research too: OpenAI's plans include deep research, limited on Free and expanded on Plus, and agent mode on paid plans. Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, is part of every ChatGPT plan. ChatGPT is best when you want to make something, not just find something.

Pricing as of October 2026

ChatGPT

  • Free: $0, with limited deep research, memory and Codex access.
  • Go: $8 a month in the US, for lighter use.
  • Plus: $20 a month. Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS; expanded deep research and agent mode.
  • Pro: from $100 a month, with plans at $100, $200 or $500.
  • Business: $20 per user a month billed annually for 2+ users, or $25 billed monthly.
  • Enterprise and Edu: contact sales.

See ChatGPT pricing and OpenAI's Codex pricing page.

Perplexity

  • Free (Standard): practically unlimited basic searches, a very limited number of Pro Searches, limited file uploads, and Perplexity picks the model.
  • Pro: $17 a month billed annually. Extended Pro Search, a choice of advanced models, image and video generation, more file uploads (up to 50 per project), and expanded access to Computer. Perplexity was offering bonus Computer credits when we checked.
  • Max: $200 a month or $2,000 a year (about $167 a month). The highest access to advanced models, the most Computer usage, 10,000 monthly credits, and early access to new features.
  • Education Pro: $10 a month for verified students and educators.
  • Enterprise Pro: from $40 per seat a month or $400 a year, with Perplexity stating that data is never used for training.

See Perplexity Pro and the plan comparison.

What that means in practice: if you only want to look things up with sources, Perplexity Free goes a long way. If you'd pay for one tool and want both research and an assistant that writes and codes, ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month covers more ground. Heavy researchers who want many models in one place may find Perplexity Pro better value.

Research and sources

Perplexity is designed around sources. Every answer shows citations, and Pro gives you a choice of models for the same question, which is useful for comparing answers. For news, product research, quick fact-finding and "what's the latest on X", it's usually faster to verify.

ChatGPT's deep research produces longer, multi-step reports and is strong for building an overview of a topic. For quick lookups, Perplexity's citation-first layout tends to be quicker to check.

Either way, citations make checking easier, not unnecessary. Open the sources for anything you'll rely on.

Writing, analysis and creating things

ChatGPT is stronger here. Drafting emails, rewriting text, summarising documents you upload, planning projects, and back-and-forth brainstorming are what it's built for. Projects, memory and custom GPTs help on paid plans.

Perplexity can write too, and Computer can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and web apps on paid plans. But its core is answering questions from the web.

Coding and building apps

ChatGPT includes Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, in every plan as of October 2026, with Plus adding it on the web, in the CLI, in IDEs and on iOS. That makes it the stronger choice for developers. Our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini for building apps guide compares coding agents in more depth.

If you don't code and want a working web app with a database, sign-in and a public URL, an AI app builder is a more direct route. With Mythex you describe the app in chat, see a live preview and publish in one click. Free gives you 5 credits a day; Pro starts at $25 a month. You can also add AI features to the app you build; see how to add AI features to your app. For research and everyday questions, though, ChatGPT or Perplexity is the right tool, not an app builder.

Privacy for teams

Both offer business plans with admin controls. Perplexity says Enterprise Pro data is never used for training. OpenAI says ChatGPT Business doesn't train on your business data by default. Check each company's current data terms before putting confidential material into either tool.

Verdict

Perplexity is the better tool for finding information and checking where it came from. ChatGPT is the better general assistant for writing, analysis and coding. If you're choosing one paid plan, choose by your most common task: finding things points to Perplexity, making things points to ChatGPT. Many people find the free tier of one plus the paid tier of the other works well.

Questions

Is Perplexity better than ChatGPT?

For looking things up with sources, many people prefer Perplexity: it's built as an answer engine and every answer includes inline citations. ChatGPT is the broader assistant, better for writing, brainstorming, analysing files and coding, with its Codex coding agent included in every plan. Many people use both: Perplexity to find, ChatGPT to make.

How much do ChatGPT and Perplexity cost?

As of October 2026 ChatGPT has a Free plan, Go at $8 a month, Plus at $20 a month and Pro from $100 a month. Perplexity has a free plan, Pro at $17 a month billed annually, and Max at $200 a month or $2,000 a year. Business plans are $20 per user a month billed annually for ChatGPT and from $40 per seat a month for Perplexity Enterprise Pro.

Does Perplexity use ChatGPT?

Perplexity Pro lets you choose between several AI models from different companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, as well as Perplexity's own Sonar model. So you can use an OpenAI model inside Perplexity, but Perplexity is a separate product with its own search and citations.

Can I trust AI answers with citations?

Citations make answers easier to check, not automatically correct. The model can still misread or over-summarise a source. For anything that matters, open the cited pages and confirm the key facts yourself, whichever tool you use.
