Glossary / No-code

What is no-code?

No-code is a way of building apps, websites and automations with visual tools, such as drag-and-drop editors and settings panels, instead of writing programming code.

No-code tools give you ready-made pieces: forms, tables, buttons, lists, and connections to other services. You arrange them on a canvas and set rules such as "when this form is sent, add a row to this table".

They are good for websites, simple internal tools, forms and workflows, and they let people who know a business best build its software themselves.

The limits show up when you need something the pieces were not designed for. You can only do what the tool offers, and moving a project to another tool usually means rebuilding it.

AI app builders are often grouped with no-code because you do not write code in either. The difference is that an AI builder writes real code for you, so there is no fixed set of pieces.

Examples

  • A form that adds rows to a spreadsheet
  • A members directory built with drag-and-drop blocks

Questions

What is the difference between no-code and low-code?

No-code tools are designed so you never write code. Low-code tools are mostly visual too, but expect developers to add code for the harder parts.

Can no-code apps scale?

Many handle a small business's needs comfortably. Limits tend to be on custom features, pricing as usage grows, and being tied to one vendor, rather than on raw speed.
