A Yarn Shop Website and Store That Remembers Every Dye Lot
Mythex builds a yarn shop's online store, class calendar and stock list from a description of your shelves and your community. Every skein is counted by dye lot, so when a knitter needs one more ball for a sweater you can see whether you have the matching lot, and classes and knit-and-natter nights take sign-ups in the same place.
What a yarn shop needs from its software
A yarn shop sells three things: skeins, know-how and a seat at Thursday's knitting group. The skeins are the tricky part, because every batch carries a dye lot, and a sweater knitted from two lots shows a stripe. A shelf of twelve skeins in one colourway might be three lots of four, which is useless to someone planning a cardigan. When a regular comes back three weeks later one ball short, the lot they bought is remembered, or it is not. Classes fill and need waiting lists, kits are built from yarn and patterns, and autumn brings the sweater rush. The shop needs stock by lot, customers linked to what they bought, and a calendar that fills its classes.
- Stock counted per colourway and dye lot
- The dye lot on every product page and order
- A record of which lot each project-sized purchase came from
- Classes and help sessions with capacity and waiting lists
- Kits built from yarn, pattern and notions
- Deposits on non-returnable special orders from indie dyers
What you can build for yarn shops
An online store that shows the lot
Yarns are listed by weight, fibre, brand and colourway, and every listing shows the dye lot in stock. A customer who already has some of the yarn can enter the lot from their ball band, and the order is matched before it is packed. Pattern downloads sell beside the physical yarn, and a quantity helper suggests how many skeins a pattern size needs.
Build an online store for my yarn shop. Products have brand, fibre, weight, colourway and dye lot, with stock per lot. Customers can enter a dye lot from their ball band to match an existing project, and staff see that request on the order. Sell PDF patterns as downloads, and show how many skeins each size of a pattern needs.
Stock by dye lot, with low-stock alerts per lot
Receive each delivery by yarn, colourway and lot. The app tells you that a colourway shows twelve skeins but the largest matching lot is five, so you know whether to promise a sweater's worth. Kits deduct their components, and needles and notions have reorder levels.
Make an inventory app for a yarn shop tracking stock by yarn, colourway and dye lot. Show the largest single-lot quantity for each colourway, alert when a lot drops below a sweater's worth, build kits from yarn, pattern and notions that deduct components when sold, and set reorder levels for needles and notions.
Knit-and-natter nights and workshops
The weekly social group repeats every Thursday and is free, but people register, so you know who comes and can tell them about new yarns. Workshops on cables or colourwork have a capacity, materials included and a waiting list. Trunk shows and dyer visits get their own event pages.
Build event sign-ups for my yarn shop: a free weekly knit-and-natter group with recurring dates and registration, paid workshops with capacity, materials included and a waiting list, and one-off trunk shows and dyer visits.
Remember the lot, the project and the grandchild
For each regular, record the yarn, colourway and dye lot of every project-sized purchase, the classes they have taken and their skill level, and the project they mentioned. When they come back one ball short, you look up the lot instead of guessing.
Make a CRM for my yarn shop with each customer's purchases (yarn, colourway, dye lot, quantity, date), classes attended, skill level, current projects and knitting group attendance. Let me search by dye lot to find who bought it.
Paid help sessions for stuck knitters
Short one-to-one sessions for dropped stitches, picking up a pattern or finishing seams, booked around the tutor's hours, with a note on the project they are bringing. It rescues sweaters and keeps free counter advice from swallowing the day.
Build a booking page for 30-minute knitting help sessions and private lessons at my yarn shop, around the tutor's availability, with a note field for the project and pattern the customer is bringing.
A knit-along with a kit and a start date
One page with the pattern, the kit in three colourways, the start date and weekly check-in dates. Knitters buy together, and the finished projects become your best advertising.
Create a landing page for a knit-along at my yarn shop with the pattern, a kit in three colourways, start date, weekly meet-up dates, and a sign-up that adds the kit to the order.
What to put in on day one
Start with stock by lot for your best-selling yarns, not the whole shop. Enter each colourway with the lots on the shelf and their counts, and add the dye lot to the till routine for any project-sized sale. Put the class calendar and the knitting group online the same week, since that is where regulars look first. Add the online store once stock by lot is trusted; selling online before the counts are right creates the mismatched-lot returns you are trying to avoid.
- Best-selling yarns by colourway and lot
- Record the lot on project-sized sales
- Class calendar and group sign-up
Explain dye lots on your site
Many newer knitters have never heard of dye lots until they see the stripe. A short plain-language page, with an invitation to send a photo of the ball band when they need more, saves a disappointed customer and shows you understand the craft.
Questions
Can my online store track dye lots?
Yes. Each colourway can hold several lots with their own stock counts, and the product page shows which lot is in stock. Customers can request a specific lot when ordering.
Can people book knitting classes online?
Yes. Classes get a capacity, a price and a waiting list, and payment can go through a provider connected to your own account.
Can I sell PDF patterns?
Yes. Patterns can be sold as downloads stored in your project's file storage, alongside physical yarn and kits.
Is it free to build my yarn shop site?
The Free plan needs no credit card and gives daily credits, enough to build and publish a first version. Pro is $25/month and adds a custom domain and code editing.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. You describe what you want in plain language and change it by chatting, the same way you would explain it to a helper in the shop.
