Data Cabling Contractors: Build Quoting, Test-Result Handover and Job Tools with AI

Mythex builds tools for structured cabling and fibre installers from a chat: quotes worked out from point count, run length and containment, a client portal where test results are filed by cabinet, patch panel and point, records of approved variations and retentions, and a crew schedule that books the certification tester as well as the engineer. Add a website with photos of tidy cabinets and you have the whole set.

What a cabling job needs written down

A cabling job starts with a survey and a point count and ends with every link tested, labelled and handed over. In between, the point count changes on every fit-out, other trades decide when you can get into the ceiling, and you may be working nights in an occupied office. The paperwork is where small firms lose money: test results handed over as a pile of exports, variations agreed verbally and disputed at the final account, retentions forgotten, and final invoices waiting weeks because the as-built drawings were never finished. Two years later the client's IT manager wants the original test for one dead socket and nobody can find it.

  • Quotes built from points, run lengths, containment and assumptions
  • Test results organised by site, cabinet, patch panel and point
  • Variations with written approval before extra cable is pulled
  • Retentions tracked until release
  • Each site's numbering scheme and access rules on record
  • The tester scheduled as a resource, with its calibration date

What you can build for data cabling contractors

A handover portal that files every test by point number

Clients log in and find results the way their IT team thinks: site, then cabinet, then patch panel, then point. Each point has its test result attached, and the as-built floor plan shows where it sits. Warranty documents live with the site, and the client can request extra points or moves against the existing numbering.

Build a client portal for my data cabling company. Each client sees their sites; each site has cabinets, patch panels and numbered points, with a test result file and pass/fail per point, plus as-built floor plans and warranty documents. Clients can request extra points against the existing numbering.

Quotes from point count, runs and containment

Enter the point count, average run length and containment needed, and the quote prices labour and materials, with separate lines for cabinets, patching, fibre links and testing. Assumptions about ceiling access, working hours and existing containment are printed on the quote. Options such as two spare points per desk or a higher cable category can be added for the client to choose.

Make a quoting tool for my cabling business. Quotes calculate from number of points, average run length and containment metres, with separate lines for cabinets, patching, fibre links and testing, a list of assumptions (ceiling access, out-of-hours working), and optional extras the client can tick.

Stage payments, variations and retentions

Larger installs bill at first fix, second fix and testing. Each variation is invoiced on its own line referencing the client's written approval. Retentions held by main contractors are tracked with their release date, and small reactive jobs are billed hourly with materials listed.

Build invoicing for my data cabling contractor business: stage invoices for first fix, second fix and test/handover, variations each linked to an approval record, retention amounts with release dates and reminders, and hourly reactive jobs with materials.

A crew schedule that books the tester too

Schedule engineers around other trades on fit-outs, and record night and weekend shifts with the out-of-hours rate. The certification tester is a resource you book like a person, so two jobs never need it on the same day, and its calibration date is on the calendar. Site inductions are checked before an engineer joins a job.

Create a scheduling app for my cabling crews. Assign engineers to jobs by day, mark night or weekend shifts, and book our one certification tester as a resource so it can't be double-booked. Track its calibration due date and which engineers have completed each site's induction.

Jobs installed but not yet handed over

See points installed and tested per job against the quote, the list of jobs waiting only on test results or documents before the final invoice, revenue by client type, and retentions due for release. The not-handed-over list is usually money you have earned but not yet claimed.

Build a dashboard for my cabling company: points installed and tested vs quoted per job, jobs complete but awaiting handover documents, revenue by direct client, main contractor and IT partner, and retentions due in the next 90 days.

A website that shows tidy cabinets

Pages for copper cabling, fibre, cabinet builds and testing, each with photos of finished work. IT managers judge a cabler by neat patching and labels, so show cabinets with the door open. Explain what your handover includes and whether you work out of hours in occupied offices.

Make a website for my data cabling company with pages for structured cabling, fibre installation, comms cabinets and testing, a gallery of finished cabinets, case studies by building type, a section on what our handover pack includes, and a survey request form.

From tester exports to a searchable handover

Most testers export results as files per link or as one long report. Upload them per site and tag each one with cabinet, panel and point number, or ask Mythex to read the point ID from the file name if your naming is consistent. Start with your next job rather than your archive, and record the site's numbering scheme on the first visit, so extra points added later follow the same sequence.

  • Upload test files per site
  • Tag by cabinet, panel and point
  • Record each site's numbering convention

Getting variations signed before the cable is pulled

On fit-outs the point count moves weekly. Add a variation form to the job: what changed, the extra points or metres, the price, and the name of the person approving. Ask for approval in the app or by a reply you attach, and only then schedule the work. At the final account, every extra on the invoice has a matching approval.

Questions

Can clients download test results themselves?

Yes. A client portal lists their sites, cabinets and points with the test file attached to each one. Their IT team can find a single point's result without asking you.

Can I upload exports from my cable tester?

Yes. Mythex projects include file storage, so you can upload PDF or other export files and attach them to points. It stores and organises the files; it does not certify the results.

Can engineers use it on site from a phone?

Yes, it works in a phone browser. On Pro, Mythex can also turn it into Android and iPhone apps that open your published app.

Do I need to code?

No. You describe the jobs, stages and documents you use and Mythex builds the app. You change it by chatting.

Is it free?

The Free plan needs no credit card and gives daily credits to build and publish. Pro is $25 a month for a custom domain, code editing and more credits.
