Replit vs Cursor: Cloud App Builder or AI Code Editor?

Replit and Cursor compared on who they suit, hosting, databases, mobile apps, agents and pricing as of September 2026, with a clear verdict for each.

Choose Replit if you want to go from an idea to a published app in one place — an AI Agent that builds it, plus a database, login, hosting and even native mobile apps — without setting up your own machine. Choose Cursor if you are a developer with a codebase and want the strongest AI help inside your editor, terminal and pull requests, and you already have a way to deploy. As of September 2026 both have free plans and paid plans from $20 a month.

How we compared

This comparison uses publicly stated features and pricing from Replit's and Cursor's own sites and documentation in September 2026. We did not benchmark the agents or grade code. The criteria:

  • Who it is for — builders who want a running app, or developers who want an assistant
  • Where the code runs — cloud workspace or your own machine
  • Backend and hosting — database, login, publishing
  • Mobile — native apps or not
  • Pricing — free plan, first paid plan, and extra usage charges

Replit

How it feels. You describe what you want and Replit's Agent builds it in a cloud workspace, then you test it in Preview and publish. Replit offers Free, Power and Max agent modes that trade speed and capability against cost, plus a Plan mode on paid plans for thinking through work before code changes. You can also start from a Replit Design template or a Figma design.

Backend. Replit's docs describe built-in databases, App Storage for files, and two login options Agent sets up for you: Replit Auth, where users sign in with Replit accounts, and Clerk Auth, which gives your app its own branded accounts. You can buy a domain inside Replit and connect it to a published app.

Mobile. Replit documents building native iOS and Android apps with Agent, testing them on your phone with Expo Go, and using its Launch feature to build, sign and upload to App Store Connect, then TestFlight and App Store review. You need an Apple Developer account.

Pricing as of September 2026. Starter is free, with daily Agent credits up to a monthly cap, monthly credits for databases, storage and publishing, Lite build only, and one published app that goes down after 30 days and carries a "Made with Replit" badge. Plan Mode, full build and third-party connectors need Core. Core is $20/month ($18 billed annually) and includes $20 of credits toward the most capable models. Pro is $100/month ($90 billed annually), with up to 15 collaborators, up to 50 viewers, 10 parallel agents and 28 days of database rollback. Enterprise is custom, with SSO/SAML. See Replit pricing.

Watch for. Publishing, databases and storage are billed by usage on top of the plan, so a busy app costs more than the sticker price. Replit's docs have a billing section for each.

Cursor

How it feels. Cursor is for developers. Its site describes a coding agent with "an autonomy slider": you decide whether the AI makes a targeted edit or takes on a whole task. It runs as a desktop app, in your terminal, in Slack and on GitHub pull requests, and its cloud agents use their own computers to build, test and demo features.

Backend and hosting. Cursor doesn't host apps or provide a database. It works on your code wherever it lives, and you deploy it wherever you like. That's a strength for teams with an existing stack and a gap for someone starting from zero.

Reviews and extensions. Bugbot reviews pull requests (usage-billed on individual plans). Cursor supports MCP servers, skills and hooks for connecting outside tools and team rules.

Pricing as of September 2026. Hobby is free with limited Agent requests. Pro is $20/month with unlimited tab completions, extended agent limits, Bugbot access and cloud agents. Pro+ is $60/month and Ultra $200/month for more usage. Teams is $40 per user per month (Standard) or $120 (Premium, with 5x the Standard agent limits), adding SSO, central billing, usage analytics and team-wide privacy mode. Enterprise is custom. Cursor's docs note that the models you pick affect how fast included usage runs out. See Cursor pricing.

Watch for. Cursor makes you faster at writing code, but the rest of shipping — servers, databases, secrets, domains — is still yours.

Where each is clearly stronger:

  • Replit wins on everything around the code: hosting, database, login, domains and mobile publishing, all in one account.
  • Cursor wins on depth inside a codebase and fit with a developer's existing workflow and tools.

They are not really rivals so much as different layers. Our guide to AI app builders vs AI coding assistants explains the split, and GitHub Copilot vs Cursor compares Cursor with its closest developer-tool rival.

Where Mythex fits

Mythex sits on Replit's side of the line: it's an AI app builder, not an editor plugin. You describe the app in chat, the agent writes the code in a private cloud sandbox, and you get a live preview, a dedicated Postgres database and file storage when the app needs them, and publishing to yourname.mythex.app or your own domain on Pro. Behind the chat there's a code editor and terminal, and you can ask for a Python, Node, C# or Java API alongside a React frontend. Login and payments use your own providers and keys, which the agent wires in.

It also connects to Cursor. Mythex runs a remote MCP server, so Cursor can build in a Mythex cloud sandbox and publish from there (tool calls need a Pro account); see MCP in the docs. As of September 2026 Mythex Free gives 5 credits a day (up to 30 a month) and Pro is $25/month, with export, GitHub sync and one credit balance for building and hosting.

Where Replit is ahead: Mythex's Android and iPhone apps (on Pro) wrap the web app rather than using native screens, and it doesn't document scheduled jobs. Head-to-heads: Mythex vs Replit and Mythex vs Cursor.

Before you choose

  1. Decide who you are for this project. If you don't want to touch hosting, start with Replit or another app builder. If you have a repo, start with Cursor.
  2. Check the usage bill, not just the plan. Replit meters hosting and databases; Cursor meters model usage.
  3. Keep an exit. Put the code in GitHub early, whichever you choose.

Questions

What is the difference between Replit and Cursor?

Replit is a cloud platform where an AI Agent builds, runs and publishes your app, with a database, login and hosting built in. Cursor is an AI editor and coding agent for developers working on their own codebase; you choose where the app is hosted.

Is Replit or Cursor better for beginners?

Replit, for most beginners. You can start from a prompt in the browser and publish without setting up a computer, a database or hosting. Cursor assumes you are comfortable with code, Git and deployment.

How much do Replit and Cursor cost?

As of September 2026 both have free plans. Replit Core is $20 a month ($18 billed annually) and Replit Pro is $100 ($90 billed annually). Cursor Pro is $20 a month, with Pro+ at $60 and Ultra at $200. Replit also bills for publishing, databases and storage by usage.

Can I use Replit and Cursor together?

Yes. Many developers prototype and host in one place and do deeper editing in another. The simplest link between them is GitHub: keep the code in a repository both can reach.
